I'm going to start off a little bit sappy here. I think pregnancy is such an amazing, beautiful thing. The fact that women have the ability to create another human who will grow up to be their own person is one of the most incredible miracles on this planet, in my opinion. That's what makes maternity photography so appealing to me. There is so much raw beauty and emotion to capture.
While training me to become a newscast director, my supervisor told me to never drown myself but to stay six inches above water. I apply that as I'm learning and growing as a photographer. I'm new to begin with, but even more inexperienced with maternity photography. How would I get someone to hire a young photographer simply trying to build her portfolio, when there are so many photographers out there who do shoots like this all the time?
I took a chance and reached out to a girl I met in college named Emilee. After she announced she was having a baby girl via Facebook, I sent her a message. I told her how I wanted to add more maternity pictures to my portfolio, and would be willing to take some for her at a lower price than my usual rate. She talked to her boyfriend and they agreed to give me a shot.
I was like a little kid on Christmas morning working with them. I loved her dress, her boots, the tattoo on his arm, and they even brought their own props and ideas! Not only did they have great personality but they were adventurous as well. The pictures prove it; the variety made it a fun, well rounded shoot. I was beaming as I was going through the pictures!
To be honest, I don't like reaching out to people (even though I've had to do it a lot.) I know its part of starting a business. I just never want to pressure someone into feeling obligated to hiring me. Every photographer has their own unique style and it doesn't always fit each person's taste.
However, I've been poring over maternity pictures for months and coming up with ideas of my own. I needed a chance to bring that all to life. I was so thankful for Emilee and Seth giving me that opportunity. I was even happier when I discovered I wasn't the only one who loved the photos. I received wonderful feedback from both of them along with many others through social media. I can't even begin to describe how rewarding that was.
Emilee gave me so many great compliments, but one thing she said that stuck out was, "We are definitely keeping her as our first option for a photographer!" I did the one thing I've been trying to do since I started this whole photo thing: I established another relationship! I reached out to somebody and it worked, and now I might even get to work with them in the future.
I owe a huge thank you to Emilee and Seth. What an exciting time for you both and you let me be the one the capture it. I loved working with you and can't wait to see you two become parents!
